Arsenal v. Liverpool, Kids Love the Milk Cup
Not as prestigious as it once was, the League Cup, now called the Carling Cup and formerly known as the Milk Cup (way back in the 80s) still throws up the occasional cracking tie. So, when I read that Arsenal would host Liverpool, my mind immediately went back to the last time Arsenal and Liverpool met in the League Cup and Arsenal did a 6-3 over them, at Anfield. That was really a night to remember and to think, if you live in London you could see such a clash for as little as £5. For me, that’s the real benefit of the League Cup, memorable clashes that almost every kid can afford to see in person.
Unfortunately, that 6-3 match is long gone; goal scoring superstar Julio “The Beast” Baptista bagged his quad and then tired of the dreary rain of London, or maybe the food, or whatever excuse he could come up with and bogged off back to Spain and is now in Rome. In fact, not much is left of either of those two teams that met that day, even Almunia, who was backup keeper for Arsenal then, has been dropped and is now third choice keeper at Arsenal.
Given all the departures and arrivals I don’t think the last time these two teams met in the League Cup will matter much to any of them. Maybe Cesc will have a whimsical twinkle in his eye as he sits in the stands, smartly dressed no doubt, reminiscing about the year that Chelsea beat the cup out of our hands — I mean literally beat Arsenal up and took it, like a bully taking milk money. But for players like Merida, Gibbs, Aquilani, Babel and Ramsey this is a chance not to reminisce, but a chance to prove themselves, against another top four team to boot.
Hungry youth playing in a single elimination match against another top club in front of 60,000 screaming fans, that’s a match to watch.
Wenger’s passed a lot of milestones these last few weeks (Sportsboys has an awesome breakdown of Wenger’s tenure) and so why not throw one more on to the pile: today will be his 750th match in charge. We all know the record, W 436 D 177 L 136, on the way to three Premier League titles and four FA Cups and as glorious as that is there are two things missing; the League Cup and the Champions League.
Don’t think that Arsene doesn’t want to win today or that he doesn’t care about this tournament just because he likes to blood youth. The inclusion of Nasri, Eduardo, Bendtner, Senderos, and Silvestre in the squad is a tip that Wenger is taking this match and this tournament very seriously. I can guarantee you that if Arsenal win the Carling Cup, which I said they have every chance to do in the season preview, they will proudly display the trophy in the trophy case and point to that as a jumping off point for more silverware.
The lineup should be straight forward: Nasri, Eduardo and Bendtner leading the attack; Ramsey, Merida and Coquelin in the middle; Gilbert, Senderos, Silvestre, and Gibbs holding the line; and Fabianski starting in goal. Notably absent from that lineup is Jack Wilshere who failed a fitness test on Sunday due to an ankle knock.
Liverpool’s £20m Summer replacement for Xabi Alonso (and one time Arsenal target) Alberto Aquilani will get his first start for Liverpool today which means that there will be two rusty players on the pitch tonight, Nasri and Aquilani.
Irregardless the rust, I expect that both teams will go for it tonight and fight for all 90 minutes. After all, for 11 young men tonight will be their last chance to prove themselves this year — they will leave everything on the field.
Ten Things I Hate About You

10. Too many supporters, even at 50,ooo seats they would be hard pressed to fill the stadium.
9. Why is the jumbotron showing the Spurs celebrating, when the action on the pitch is different? Maybe it’s a continuous loop of their 5-1 Carling Cup win over Arsenal.
8. It looks like at least one Spurs player is moving, that’s one too many.
7. They try to steal the clock end idea from Arsenal but everyone knows Spurs fans can only read digital clocks.
6. Speaking of moving, there should be a blur where their twitchy manager stands.
5. The back of the single-tier stand will never read “Tottenam Hotspur” everyone knows it should read “Naming Rights.”
4. There’s no way Spurs fans could afford real flags
3. It’s unlikely that Spurs would play a night game, unless they’re in the League Championship, don’t they play a lot of their games at night?
2. The Spurs players should be in red and white, since they obviously wish they were Arsenal so badly.
1. There’s no way that the grass would be that green, everyone knows that grass can’t grow in the shadow of the Emirates.
Right, that’s about it for today, despite the regular kickoff time in England, the match is on at 12:45 (PST) because American clocks are special and don’t go back to standard time until next week (thanks George W. Bush!). Pretty much the only way to watch the mach here in the States is via ESPN 360 and a few of us will be gathering at Doyle’s Public House in Tacoma to watch and support. There will be Liverpool supporters there as well but they are the friendly sort and you should come down so that I’m not vastly outnumbered.
See you tomorrow for the Good, Bad, and Ugly. UP THE ARSE!

Anyone have a clue why Vela didn’t make the match roster?
@arsesession, Ankle injury.
Was just about to ask the same arsesession… can’t find anything about Vela’s exclusion from the squad.
I’m noted for my research skills and I have no news on Vela.
@Tim, Vela’s exclusion is just as ominous as that of Almunia.
It gets weirder because Vela had given an interview before the match about the importance of the cup…
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/tv-online-vela-pre-liverpool-exclusive
Even Paddy Power had him playing —
@Tim, Ankle injury in the warm up.
10 things, very amusing
i like your line up tim and that should give liverpool problems, there’s experience, speed, height, finishing ability up front and experience at the back.
i do think nasri and merida might be switched to give us experience in the middle.
i do really hate bush’s arbitrary changing of DST, means we wait an extra hour for the arse!
I like the lineup also. I am thinking he left out Vela for the Carling Cup because maybe he is using him in the game this saturday v. sp*rs.
I wonder if the game was against a lesser team if Wenger wouldn’t have included so many experienced players. I will be watching on a grainy Justin or Ustream feed because Time Warner doesn’t like the espn360.
One last thing, i am not sure if you saw the item in the daily mail about Phil Brown. Over the last two years he has become my most hated manager in the EPL (equal with Fergie, above Sam Allerdyce and Mark Hughes) and i am so happy to see if he close to the sack. It couldn’t happen to a better Die-Hard villain.
@TxGun, I did, and there’s another article which says that if they don’t stay up in the EPL they will go into administration
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=690516&sec=england&campaign=rss&source=soccernet&cc=5901
Phil Brown getting the sack, I couldn’t have happened to a bigger c*nt
The exclusion of vela is simply mystifying. You expect to see him on the bench during many league games yet he continues to be absent. Then after all this, interview, history in the competition, not even in the squad? The most exciting prospect for this match was the idea of seeing vela edu and nik leading the line together. WTF.
PHIL BROWN HAS LEFT THE STADIUM
I REPEAT — PHIL BROWN HAS LEFT THE STADIUM
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=690621&sec=england&cc=5901&campaign=rss&source=soccernet
The only thing I can think of is that Vela has some virus or he’s being kept for Spurs and AZ as we’re a bit short of firepower at the moment with Eduardo seeming to manage one game in ten.
@Mia, A virus…I don’t like the sound of that…..
Quite! But it has to be something weird, unlesss the person typing the list has screwed up!
@17highburyterrace, He has caught Almunia’s chest cold.
@arsesession, Hope you’re wrong and Mia’s right and that it’s a typo.
How does this ESPN360 thing work. I’ve got DirectTV (so I can have setanta, of course) and there’s a ESNa station. Might that carry the game or should I go to the streams?
@17highburyterrace, go to ESPN360.com on your computer and see if you can watch a game.
First off, I love Cesc’s new Nike shoes but, am I the only one saddened by the idea that Cesc’s “signature move” is basic football?
http://www.nike.com/nikefootball/training/videos?locale=en_US&filterName=signature&guid=03e493000ccbbf340ee66b332cbf39dc_id969
@Tim, I like basic football, and doing it with one’s head up (instruction #7) is the key….
Cesc is an interesting case in that if his team (Arsenal and/or Spain) plays well he often looks fantastic, but when they don’t, the observer is bound to ask what’s all the fuss about the slow guy? It makes the whole “Should I (he) stay or should I go” crap all the more interesting. If he could lead Arsenal to something big he would be legend, but the easy way out, seems so easy….
Also, thanks for the tip on ESPN360, I’ve got a great picture of a sodden pitch and the background noise of a thousand horns going…
@17highburyterrace, cheers, enjoy the match!
Hull is saying “no comment” on the Daily Mail story about Phil Brown. The early report was a ‘tweet’ which is ironic since Phl Brown fined Altidore for tweeting about why he was dropped from the bench. Reportedly Brown fined Altidore 40K which is a ridiculous amount of money for that transgression.
Gareth Southgate, Phil Brown, Juande Ramos, Manuel Pelligrini(?).
Portsmouth still owe us a payment for the L. Diarra transfer and that’s why the FA has imposed a transfer ban. They also owe other clubs for players they bought like Johnson.
Seems Vela has a knee injury, according to arsenal.com… mystery solved !!
@Steve, Thank the Gods, I thought he’d gotten pig AIDS from Blackburn Cloggers.
Bookies have stopped taking bets on Phil Brown losing his job. That seals it for Phil Brown.
Nice opportunistic goal by Merida from the edge of the box and off the post.
The reply was golazo from Insua from about 20yds that went up and over Fabianski. Fabianski looked silly as he allowed Voronin to close on his goal kick and was lucky to escape w/ a throw in.
So far the early comments are that Bendtner is showing some good skills but his decision making and final ball are frustrating right now.
Nasri has been very active. Senderos looks good but you can see that by comparison, he’s clearly 3rd choice material.
Sylvestre looked scary on the first serious Liverpool attack as he was easily bypassed.
Overall the kids are putting in some good efforts. They just need the seniors to hold up their end.
50″ a rocket from Bendtner into the roof of the net. 2-1
Let the senior team learn from these kids how to close out a game. Some nervy moments though.
Well it was an exciting game. Gibbs and Gilbert looked good at the wing back positions but I’m becoming ever more worried about the heart of our defense because without Gallas and Vermaelen it looks pretty much sunk. Silvestre and Senderos were at odds whenever a spell of pressure hit them. I’m definitely calling them out because Silvestre is just old and was never great and Senderos is not that good. Despite his call for potential he’s never really fulfilled it.
I would have liked to see Coquelin this game but got Eastmond for a good 85 minutes or so.
We turned over the ball way too much and luckily so did Liverpool. The future looks bright especially with Merida who I think would be great in the middle of the park instead of always being pushed out left. However, not alot of these players are ready to step up to the big boys because they showed alot of inexperience today and some of the senior players as I’ve mentioned have shown that this they’re not up to par for a club of Arsenal’s status. I hope Wenger will consider spending some of the cash in January for some more solid defensive options both in the backline and the middle of the park.
Don’t let this win paper over the weakness at CB.
@ctpa, Sendy will be fine if he is partnered with Vermaelen or Gallas. Pairing him with Silvestre makes the job harder, since neither is that fast. Regardless they both did well enough tonight. Some nervy misreads, but decent in the air, etc.
@Xabier, It’s not even about speed though because I saw Babel on numerous occasions turn him inside out. Senderos was just mesmerized by the feet when the ball didn’t even move. He looked way too intimidated more of ten than not when a player exhibited even a little technical skill.
Chelsea score sheet against Bolton: Kalou, Deco, Brogba, Malouda.
Man City score sheet against Scunthorpe: Tevez, Santa Cruz (coming back from an injury so it’s ok), Ireland, Lescott, Johnson (also an injury returnee).
Liverpool played the game w/ the right spirit and w/ comparable players.
Hey Acquilani, you just got off the bus so don’t start crying for PKs already. next thing you know you’ll be diving in the box like Gerrard. This is not Serie A. Ball to hand is not a PK.
Robbie Keane bigging up Sp**s bench vs Arsenal. Hey Robbie, worry more about your starters getting it done.
Lennon’s down so Bentley gets a chance to resurrect his career.
Hull announce that the Phil Brown media speculation is wrong. Where is that statement of support for Phil Brown?
@ctpa, it’s hard to argue ball-to-hand when your hands are up next to your face.
The first half showed clearly why Eastmond started. He put in some tidy challenges and intercepts. Second half he looked a bit spent, probably mentally more than anything, what with this being his debut against a decent team. Tidy lad, whose pressing and tackling caused them to lose the ball to Merida in the first place. Good to see him take the opportunity with both hands!
Up THE ARSE! Bendtner is my choice for MOTM, simply because his work rate today. Agreed on Senderos, he looked good but is clearly behind gallas and the verminator. Though it is good to know that we have a good backup. Nasri and Merida were quality today. Eastmond showed quality too. All in all our weakest points were Gerry and Fabianski(understandably)
@Yan, I’d have given my MotM to Gilbert – he was everywhere on the right side and put in quite a few good tackles and interceptions. Sagna better watch out because if Gilbert ever learns to cross better than him, then Sagna could be bench fodder.
I enjoyed the post match song being “The Kids Are Alright”. Apt.
Great game, great result. The sun is just about to rise!!!
Wow. Great performances from nasri, merida, gibbs, and gilbert. They could all of been better if they had regular pt, but they never stopped working for the ball and that was great to see.
CTPA, I read that article and immediately headed here because I knew someone would have seen it. I literally laughed at the article. What Robbie Keane said is nothing short of lunacy on the level of Al Davis (I doubt any non-americans will get that, so google al davis and you’ll find out). Anyway, the article I read made mention of how spurs only trailed arsenal by 1 point and failed to note our game in hand. It also talked about how they squeaked Liverpool 2-1 and acted as if they had gone to Camp Nou and put 5 past Valdes and also failed to note our b-team’s victory today. Spurs fans must live in a fantasy world. Because they suck balls.
However, if I was a betting man, I would put a ton of money on keane scoring in the match. That bastard always scores against us, he has to have more vs us in the past 3 years than anyone.
Eastmond – big surprise. I’ve only seen him once, as a fullback, and he didn’t look very good. Could he be the solution when Song is away? I like Coquelin even better but suspect he just doesn’t have the stamina for 90 minutes yet. To me he looked great against West Brom, ran his heart out and made some very nice passes, but he got replaced by Randall at half-time, according to Wenger because he was tired.
Gilbert: remember when he last played for us three or four years ago, how brilliant he looked, almost ready to replace Gary Neville in the England team? Then he went on a couple of disasterous loans where he fell out with the managers, followed by a more successful period at Leicester, where I thought he would stay – if he was lucky. How nice to be wrong. How nice that Wenger stuck with him, knowing he had the character to turn things around and come good. Yes, Sagna look out.
I thought Silvestre did OK. But, as arseblog puts it, Bendtner looked like he was playing in wellies. He always does to me; maybe it’s a confidence thing, but I really think centre half might be his natural position: he and Vermaelen – now that would be the attacking back line to gladden Wenger’s heart, along any of our fullbacks, plus Fabi behind, or maybe in front, doing his dribbling thing…
We’ll draw Spurs. We always draw Spurs, have done something like 6 times out of 7 at the last count, I believe, for the greater profits of Sky.
The unfortunate part is you may be right, mia. Ade was the guy who always scored against them. I wonder if anyone can fill that void- perhaps señor Fab?
Remember the nike ad from the summer where Andrei had the “Five Goals. One Game” line with that smirk on his face? It would be fine if he decided to do that on saturday.
And how awesome is it that we get this one in HD on espn?!
Pires always used to score against them too.
