English defenders, for decades, have known that they are slower and less agile, so they make up for it by throwing themselves into every tackle. They’ve got their sports mixed up. This isn’t rugby. It’s the mentality of English defenders, and it is regarded as a good, hard play. If you are looking at that tackle, and you believe it was fair play, than you see a different sport than the rest of the world. I’ve watched Sol jumping around screaming, and I feel what he is feeling, because he is English, and a defender, but he doesn’t play this way. He plays defense in a fair, competitive way. He doesn’t leave his feet if he’s not going to win the ball. He knows that his countrymen’s lack of precision defense has just cost his teammate’s season. It really looks like he has it all summed up right there in his head, like he really understands it. The other Europeans on the team also look disgusted, like, ‘fucking typical English defender, fucking careless!’

It’s the difference between someone who speeds up when they see a yellow and someone who slows down.
