Liveblogging Blackburn v. Arsenal
4:20am Pacific Standard Time. If the game had been any other time I would have gone down to my local. But as it stands nothing is open and even dedicated football fans don’t risk the wrath of the liquor control board when their business is at stake. So, instead I’m at my couch, Coffee is on, dog has been put out, and I settle in for the pre-game.
4:30am. Normally the wizened old commentators are horrible but Steve McManaman and Robbie Mustoe are doing a really good job being complimentary about both Arsenal and Blackburn. For example, I didn’t once here the cliche that dominates all conversation before and after these games in England about how Sam Allardyce has a “hoodoo” over Arsene Wenger.
4:45am. Holy crap, I thought kickoff would be closer to 5am. I’m surprised and haven’t had a chance to set things up on the blog. Now, we are off and already it’s nothing but set plays. Arsenal are doing well with the constant barrage from Blackburn.
5:00am — ok, 10 minutes in and Arsenal should be ahead 2-0, Diouf should have been sent off for headbutting Almunia, Almunia is doing very well dealing with the Blackburn set pieces, Gamst has discovered his true talent as a ball wiper, and Paul Robinson has discovered his lone talent as a long kicker.
17′ — Samba uses Diaby’s shoulders to gain an advantage and misses an open header. Arshavin and Cesc starting a bit slow.
19′ — Throw… ball wiping… THEO!!! Arsenal were threatening the whole game, opening Blackburn at nearly every opportunity. And van Persie plays in Theo who score a brilliant goal in the fart post, unstoppable, but hey, he’s got no brain right? Score more now Arsenal! TO THE TOP OF THE TABLE
25′ — Theo lets the ball drift across his body and destroys his marker who is reduced to pulling Walcott’s shirt. No call but Theo wins a corner. He’s having a hell of a match already.
26′ — El Hadji Douche rolls Koscielny and slides the ball past a quiescent Clichy and Vermaelen who somehow lost all of their markers. Pathetic, weak defending, and I’m not sure who should shoulder the blame there — Clichy for losing Diouf? Koscielny for getting shrugged off by a midget? Vermaelen for not organizing them? All of the above?
34′ — FUCK. Robin van Persie is down and I’m really, really, really and tired of saying that. But here’s the other thing, why did Chris Foy stop Arsenal’s attack 1 minute ago when that diver Gamst was down in the other end of the field, and yet he allowed Blackburn to play on with van Persie down RIGHT AROUND THE PLAY.
37′ — ball wiping. Song is having a poor game, giving the ball away cheaply.
39′ — Gamst knocks Diaby over as he’s having a shot. No call of course because Chris Foy either doesn’t understand what a foul is, is blind, or…
43′ — you know what Gamst wants for Christmas? Another couple of balls and an extra set of hands. I’m saying he fidgets with his balls a lot.
46′ — So what position is it that Clichy plays? Because he’s never marking his wide attacker.
Half time and all the old ghosts, save one, are evident. Almunia is having a really good game and is exercising some demons here so, straight away I have to give him credit. Meanwhile, Clichy is having another poor performance and Song is turning the ball over too much. We need to stop giving the ball away cheaply and start marking people. Clichy, in particular is to blame for their goal: he looked back, saw Blackburn’s leading goal scorer and LET HIM RUN UNMARKED. Koscielny deserves some credit for the Blackburn goal and if he’s getting pushed over by Diouf he will be crumpled up and thrown away by a beast like Drogba. I have to think that Squillaci will seriously challenge Koscielny for a starting spot if he’s going to be brushed aside that easily.
Cesc looks tired and I don’t know why it’s not like he played a ton of minutes in the World Cup. Arshavin is trying to be tricky but it was basic passing football that got the goal. Theo is tearing Blackburn to shreds and my only hope for him is that he retires from international football, because we’ll need him healthy as Robin van Persie is probably going to be out for several months now.
As for Blackburn, well, it’s the same old shit: long balls, ball wipers, Diouf is a Douche, Chris Foy is giving them every advantage, and Christopher Samba is a large man.
Meh. We can still win this, their defense is pathetic — I should say slightly more pathetic than ours today — and our offense is custom made to score goals. Chamakh with the winner?
47′ — Arsenal start the second half and continue to look off the boil a bit. Come on boys.
51′ — Sagna saves Chamakh’s blushes and then strips the paint off El Hadji Douche to put in a great cross, Theo has a shot, and the rebound falls to Arshavin who puts away with aplomb. Now, let’s get 5 more.
53′ — Cesc shows what he can do and plays in a lovely ball to the onrushing Chamakh, who’s shot is blocked. A win at Blackburn would be a huge confidence boost.
60′ — Diaby is having a massive game. He is really putting himself out there and winning duels. Plus he’s been marking Samba. He deserves a goal and I have to say that I really love the combination of Diaby and Song (though Song is having a poor game.
63′ — they just flashed that Arsenal have had 72% of the possession in the second half. Much better all around from all the players.
66′ — Salgado takes Arshavin out and 99% of the time, that’s a yellow card 100% of the time. Chris Foy elects to make it that 1% and no card is shown. I wonder if Wenger’s words about “Rugby” hasn’t backfired a bit, or is this just an exceptionally clean game? You make the call!
70′ — oh hey look, Cesc is off and Rosicky is on. We will see all an action 20′ from Thomas I predict. Counter attacking goals?
74′ — Givet gets the first yellow for nearly stripping Theo bare after the Englishman turned him inside out like a tube sock.
78′ — Theo has a crack at goal and it looks like Robinson might have got a finger on it. Balls are being wiped.
80′ — replays show that Arsenal are fighting Samba in the box. My feeling is that if he’s allowed to put hands on the defender’s shoulders on a jump, we should be allowed to Greco-Roman wrestle him to the ground. It’s only fair.
83′ — It’s a “battle of wits” as Allardyce plays all his cards and pushes Christopher Samba into the center forward role. Sad, really.
85′ — Chris Foy makes a pigs ear of that as the Blackburn defender clearly handles the ball and thus played Theo on side, or at least we should have had a free kick. Terrible refereeing.
87′ — I’m getting nervous now, but I have to say I loved seeing Wilshere tackle Samba. Brilliant. FUCK… CLICHY. Come on.
90′ — Rosicky had a shot well wide on a counter as Christopher Samba shows that like Gamst, he is also a diving cheater. Ball wiping.
91′ — Wilshere just slips on a wide open shot. Come on Arsenal, this is ours.
AWESOME WIN. I couldn’t possible be happier. Arsenal’s second half performance was massive and we played very physically against a team who tried to out-muscle us. More thoughts tomorrow, though I’d love to hear who you think Man of the Match was.
Comments
Fucking ball washers.
Suck it. SUCK IT.
Time for Clichy to go.
1-1, very poor defending
Metatarsal.
rvp out… clichy and kos are lost at the moment while defending…
@adil, They need an experienced head to steady the ship
Koscielny is having a nightmare.
as usual those fuckin punters and ugly thugs
jones clearly pushed walcottwat a penalty but nah the thugs get away wih it
arsenal have drawn tottenham in the carling cup!
also rvp is so annoying! alway’s getting injured.
@hr, I’m not sure it was a good idea to risk him against Blackburn, but then I don’t think Chamakh would have seen Theo’s run and played that pass.
I just hope it isn’t serious, we could be down to one fit striker (AGAIN!? HOW?) by the end of today.
Watching the half time highlights, I think the blame for Blackburn’s goal should go to Clichy, he wasn’t keeping an eye on Diouf and the guy just came from behind, nipped in and scored, Vermaelen really didn’t have any chance of doing much.
Of course, you can say Koscielny shouldn’t have been rolled off the ball so easily.
kos got skinned but clichy and tv should have been done a better job of covering mdiouf. here we go with rvp again – at least chamakh brought some height with him and we should be able to do a bit better with him there.
OPERATION NETTING!
surprised that chamakh didnt start
@nycgunner, I am too, I wonder if we’ll see Rosicky in the second half, Fabregas hasn’t looked entirely fit.
I would like to see Rosicky come on for Song and Diaby drop into the DM position. Song has been simply awful in possession today.
Lord, every time there’s a free kick in their half Samba saunters up front. We need to catch em on the break.
YESSSSSSS!!!!!!
i heal like dog – andrei arshavin
@nycgunner, Haha! Is that a real quote?
@Shobo, the up for grabs podcast guys claim it is.
@Tim, I wouldn’t put it past Arshavin.
So nervous, we need a goal to settle the nerves.
lol, Walcott’s shooting at anything that moves.
Apologies for the comment spamming, Tim.
How the heck is Samba now a center forward? Hope Wilshere can make an impact.
I love Wilshere’s approach to tackling Samba.
wilshere tackling samba!!
I believe Robinson has now conceded 50 against Arsenal.
come on boys hold it together
*Crumples in a nervous heap*
well fought, well played and well done!
@nycgunner, Fracking nerve wracking is what it was! Cesc looked off the pace, Diaby was great and frustrating within seconds of each other, Walcott always looked threatening (it’s like teams just don’t know how to play against him, go tight and he turns you, give him space and he nips in behind).
Time to turn into a Stoke fan for 90 minutes. And then have a vigorous shower.
@Shobo, What it was was exactly what everyone’s been saying we need to do for years now… grind out a win when we’re not playing particularly well. I’ll take it!
I think Song and maybe Kos didnt have a great game. But by no means were they Abyssmal. I like the way Kos pokes balls away coming into the opposition attacker. I like his anticipation.
Song put in an improved shift in the second half. Made some crucial blocks. Sometimes people forget this is Kos’s second game in anew league. Both away to very tough opposition. I think he has done extremely well. Gotta say he looks quite confident.
Loved the way those cunts from Bburn tried slumping for penalties. Diouf tried his impression of Gerrard crab dive for a penalty. Big Fat Walrus is going to come out out and moan about penalties not given.
As an end note Jack Jack should have put that goal in, in the end!!
@Akash, Agreed, everyone needs time to adapt to a new league, and you can see Kos and Chamakh are still finding their feet. It’s interesting to see how our play changes when Chamakh is on the pitch, he drops a lot deeper, goes out wide, Walcott slips into the middle a lot more.
I think we did well to battle for a win, those set pieces (and goal kicks for heaven’s sake) are brutal, and Blackburn just crowd the box and make it difficult to get the ball clear, hoping it drops fortuitously.
Clichy and Sagna both had decent games I thought, Walcott really looks like he’s got some focus. Song and Fabregas need game time, you can tell they haven’t had a pre-season.
Please don’t let Van Persie be injured badly.
@Shobo, I think we need to travel with Horse placenta everywhere we go!!
Diaby had a great game. Walcott again proving his doubters wrong.
Would have liked Arsenal to kill the game off earlier (somehting ManU do to their creadit). But I was impressed with our defense today. I mean Fat Walrus put that team together only to bully teams in the box. But they didnt win too many of the balls in. Arsenal I think got to atleast 80% of them. Which I feel is a huge improvement. Something we gunner fans need to acknowledge.
@Akash, absolutely. even though kos got skinned on the first goal, he recovered and diouf cut outside to pass. it looked like there was a bit of confusion between clichy and tv5 on who to cover mame diouf. i thought other than that, kos had a pretty solid game. i think i would still prefer someone a little bit more physical when we play the likes of chelsea though. it will be interesting to see how schillaci fits in.
SONG man of the match, he played with heart.
it would be hard not to give the MTM to almunia. this was by far one of his best performances. both walcott and arshavin had amazing goals and played well but both made mistakes. cesc had a really good spell of 25 mins or so when he made plenty happen. but for me, it was almunia who kept us in the game with his flawless positioning in the box and in general, just being a little bit mental. when he had a go at diouf early in the game i had a feeling he was gonna have a good game and he came through huge.
@nycgunner, Good point, Almunia’s handling was flawless and he made at least one great save when he clawed a header away from under the bar.
He didn’t have a ton of saves to make, but he marshaled his area well, long may it continue.
Until Schwarzer arrives…
@Shobo, One minute past midnight on Tuesday (GMT) if Arsene does not bring in Mark S, we the supporters have to show support to Manuel. We should applaud him and give him confidence in his play, because he will be our No.1 until January 2011. NycGunner and Shobo: You both have the handle on this and I second your views.
Fantastic effort in the second half. Defended as a team, with Arshavin and Walcott tracking all the way back into our penalty area. Very interesting to see Wilshere even on the bench today. Denilson was fit, so it’s telling to see Wilshere put on the bench ahead of him, then played in front of Gibbs and Eboue. Arsene seems to have a lot of faith in him, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him have a huge jump in development this year like we saw with Ramsey last.
As for Man of the Match, I’d have to give it to either Almunia or Sagna. Noone else really stood out outside of Walcott, but I feel as if in such a defensive game, the MotM should go to a defensively player. I’ll give the edge to Almunia, just because it was as impressive as it was surprising. Sagna’s consistency is definitely something to behold though.
@Canadian Gooner, Not trying to be Alan Hansen here (and I agree Sagna had a really good game) but I thought it was his wrong positioning that was really responsible for the build up to that first Bburn game. But I think defensively the entire team deserves a pat on the back.
I’m liking the physical aspect of our game now. Diaby and chamakh were monsters defending set pieces.
@mark, Did you see Wilshere cannonball Samba!?
@Shobo, inspiring and comical at the same time
@mark, I was glad that Chamakh had Samba so well contained in a bear hug. Maybe he can teach that to Diaby who once again was out jumped by Samba for a header.
@ctpa, No clue why Diaby was marking Sagna, as he’s fairly useless in the air, and Samba just shrugs him off.
I’m sure the doomers will be all over Cesc, “HIS HEART’S NOT IN IT! SELL HIM ARSENE!”
I’m glad to Blackburn show up in all there tetchy glory and give us a ‘game’.
I’m glad that so many recognized that Almunia had a good game today. he finally was assertive in the box. I guess that is what fear of losing your job does to you. Fear that makes you man up to Diouf who is trying to take ‘food’ off your family’s table.
I was not pleased that we could not control the game once Fabregas went off. Especially considering that Fabregas is still not sharp with give aways and getting caught in possession on occassion.
I thought Song and Diaby had very solid games in MF. That first goal was a combination of Song being caught up field, Koscienly a step slow and not getting his intercept angle right, and Clichy still not knowing where the ‘weak side’ attacker is. Pitiful.
We are left with a pleasant memory of RVP. He is becoming a ‘luxury’ item in our lineup.
I like The Big Makh Attack. I just hope he quickly shows his ruthless side up front.
Sagna’s hustle to save that ball from going out led to our second goal.
Rosicky makes up for a lack of game control with his pace in the count.
Now Walcott cannot put a foot wrong. Bravo!
Only one yellow card in Blackburn-Arsenal game and you’d have to say Chris Foy had a good game.
@ctpa, corrections: …to see Blackburn…their tetchy
with his pace in the counter attack.
@ctpa, Manuel was never so good as when he was pushing Lehman for the number one. Perhaps he’s just one of those guys who needs to feel his job’s at stake in order to perform.
By the way, did anyone else hear the commentators mention early on that ManU. has dropped as many points at Blackburn as Arsenal has over the course of the Premier League? I can’t figure out if someone was actually calling the “Blackburn Curse” crap, or if I was dreaming.
Can’t remember one moment where the Bburn team strung together a bunch of passes!! Not one. Just amazing how they can call themselves a football team.
@Akash, Also the use of a towels has become a little old fashioned now. Why can’t these teams move on. I can’t see how wipping the ball is any different form tampering with the ball in cricket. Really, what you are looking for is a little added advantage and I think there should be no place in the game for such things.
I hope Fabregas takes note that Barcelona found their cheaper DM replacement in Mascherano.
In retrospect (hindsight and all that) perhaps Theo should have been a little more selfish and not laid the ball off to Jack.
Easy to say after Jack missed though, if Theo had taken the shot and ballooned it or it had been blocked, Hansen would have been on his back, gnawing about his brain again.
Good performance by the team overall. We handled the high balls most of the time.
Koscielny maybe shouldn’t have been muscled off the ball so easily, but Clichy is most at fault for failing to pickup Diouf. For someone who’s so fast, he isn’t a quick-thinker. Someone should accuse him of not having a footballing brain and maybe then he’ll improve his performance or Gibbs should get a run. We have Bolton at home so it’s the best time to give his first start.
It’s a good win, a hard fought win, but a win nonetheless. I can’t wait to hear what Fat Sam will moan about now.
Nobody has commented about it so I will. WTF is up with that bleached brillo* fright wig look from Song.
*a brillo pad is a soap filled pad made of metal fibers for scouring pots and pans.
@ctpa, I think he was trying to frighten everyone.
@Tim, I think he was trying to emulate his uncle Rigobert!!
@Akash, Arseblogger called his old hair the “Sideshow Bob” look, which had me in stitches.
Maybe he lost a bet?
LONDON CALLING: POGNOSIS OF THE GAME.
We came, we scored, they scored, we scored, and we left.
What else is there to say, everything has been said above, except:
Theo’s goal broke the net
Our supporters sang the same song as Blackpool last week. (This is the best trip)
Did we need to see a picture of Allardyce every 10 minutes or so on Sky
The peroxide in Song hair went to his head, to many miss passes
We played well against a very physical side with key players under performing
Toto will be the partner of Thomas, Kozzer was okay today, and Diouf was very strong.
Arshavin is too predictable on the ball
Jack missed a sitter in injury time
I hope RVP is okay. The Blackburn players were very subtle when they kicked him around
We won today. This is getting better and better.
LONDON OUT
@margarette adrien, I thought I was the only one who always knew what Arshavin was going to do with the ball when he picked it up… cut inside and shoot.
Still, he’s coming up with the goods, 2 goals so far isn’t bad at all.
@Shobo, He has a knack for being in the right place at the right time. And he’s an excellent spot-kick taker, calm as a killer.
For me the MTM was Theo again. Diaby was close, but he dribbled too much and until Chamakh came on did a poor job on Samba. I agree with those suggesting Chamakh should have started. RVP probably out for 2 weeks- it didnt look too bad. It does show we dont rely as much on Cesc and RVP. Squad looks better. Wish we had Ramsey. Friggin Shawcross, the pig.
RVP is out,but its an interlull so no harm done
@RichieGooner, Hey Tim, looks like RVP took you seriously about picking up an “injury” in order to avoid the Internationals.
Wenger: RVP twisted ankle, 8-10 days. On transfers, he is done. That sound you hear is Almunia wiping his brow and saying:”we whup them again, Josie”
Blackpool is beating Fulham 2-1. Marh Hughes looks vex.
Huntelaar to Schalke and Ibrahimovic to AC Milan on ‘loan’ with the option to buy for 30mil. Barcelona loses money on the deal. Yay!
I hope Fabregas takes these 2 wks to work on his corners because he was terrible today.
Rolleaga 1-0 Champions League group A Sp**s at 80″.
@ctpa, Haha. Spurs lose!
The Boss view on today’s game:
“If you have ambition in this league you have got to win at Blackburn. If you fail to win at Blackburn – if you go to clubs like that and you don’t win – your ambition will not be respected by the other teams so it was an important test for us”.
Wigan 1-0 Sp**s. Great team win for Wigan away.
@ctpa, bwwhaha. Perfect weekend!!

@Tim, How many passes did the Bburn make? I’m guessing Robinson made more that 50% of it.
Tim,
Would you mind giving me a link to those stats.
Thanks in advance
@Caribkid69,
You’ll have to paw through it here:
