Mark my words, van Bommel will be at the center of controversy tomorrow.

Mark van Bommel holds the key for Holland to unlock the Barcelona, errr, I mean Spanish midfield not just for his leadership and crunching tackles but because of his experience.

Van Bommel is not an Arsenal fan favorite because he won the Champions League with Barcelona back in 2006 and that’s fair enough. He’s also not the type of silky holding midfielder that Arsenal fans tend to like and again, that’s a fair a assessment — especially at this point in his career. Back when Arsenal played Barcelona he was second fiddle to Edmilson who played the holding role. He’s more of a destroyer these days and if this World Cup and Champions League final is any indication he’s pretty damn good at what he does.

A lot has been made about what MvB has been able to get away with in this World Cup but much of that comes with experience. Knowing when to leave a foot in what looks like an innocuous tackle to the ref but leaves a lump on the opponent is a skill, whether us Gooners like it or not. I can tell you that Robin van Persie will enjoy playing with Mark van Bommel for the exact reason that he knows if the Barcelona, there I go again, Spanish back line give him a kick van Bommel will be sure to get them back.

So, just in general, he’s 33 and had played football all over the world. He’s played against Spanish teams, English teams, in the World Cup, and in the Champions League in several finals. Unlike a guy like Felipe Melo, van Bommel will know exactly when to “ride” a tackle to let his opponent know he’s there. In fact, don’t be surprised if he gets under Busquets’ skin and the Spanish midfielder is either taken off or sent off tomorrow well before van Bommel even gets a yellow.

The other thing that makes him dangerous to the Spaniards is that he played in the Barcelona system, alongside Xavi and Iniesta. He knows exactly what they are going to do and if anyone on that team can make a difference defensively against Xavi it will be van Bommel. Whether he has it in the tank to keep up with Xavi for 90+ minutes remains to be seen though I suspect that the Dutch coach will use both MvB and de Jong to try and mark Xavi and Iniesta out of the game.

But his ace in the hole is this year’s Champions League final where he played with Bayern against Inter and Howard Webb was in charge. Webb is probably going to have a similar match to that one in that Spain will want to play like a better Bayern and Holland a bit like Inter (though Inter’s defense is better and Holland’s counter not as good). So, you’ll get a bit of a rematch there and van Bommel will look back to Webb’s performance and be careful not to get that early yellow that Webb likes to give defenders.

Spain, on the other hand, will be looking at the match they lost 1-0 to Switzerland where Howard Webb was in charge and will be dreading the appointment of the Englishman to the finals. I fully expect Spain to be on edge all game and ready to explode at the slightest hint of a bad call by Webb.

I also expect Mark van Bommel will be in the center of the incident, casting a wry smile in the direction of the Holland bench, smug in the knowledge that he’s gotten to the Spanish midfielders and unraveled their cool demeanor.

Well, either that or he’ll get sent of f in the first half as Spain pick apart their defense with perfect passing. Either way, van Bommel will be at the center of the controversy as far as I see it.

This v Bommel is a dirty B’stard has mainly been the making of the English media, or more specifically Clive Tydesley. Yes indeed, Clyve Tydesley, card carrying kn0bhead, I rest my case.

hope he breaks Xavi into three and ends his carrier…had enough of listening to him going on about Cesc…I have no doubt it is the Barca influence that is keeping Cesc out of the team, only way he will be allowed to be regular is by handing in transfer request ..the fact Busquets asked Pedro to be substituted after his miss further shows who runs that team …

That sounds a great idea, Xavi’s career over, I wonder who’d they’d want to replace him?

Vote -1 Vote +1dilshan

well they r broke…they will never get cesc at our price, only hope is to unsettle him and make us sell at their price which will not happen, they can start signing cast offs from citiah

They were also broke were they not, when they paid £35 million for David Villa?

@Bull,
that s before they ask the bank 150M to pay their player.

Interesting insights and something I’ll be keeping a closer eye on now tomorrow. Also, took a flyer on RvP being first goalscorer at 6-1 this morning and Kuyt at 12-1. We’ll see.

Would love to see nothing more than a Barca thrashing at hands of Rvp.

Tim, just had a look at your “Who am I and why am I here?” section and I know this might be a stupid question but is the man in that picture you? Just wondering…

@SA Gooner,

That’s Admiral James Bond Stockdale.

Paul the octopus is predicting a Spain win. Johan Cruyff is predicting a Spain win. There are several other ex-Netherlands WC team members who are predicting Spain will win. I’m predicting Holland will win.

Vote -1 Vote +1looneygooner

@ctpa, the octopus only predicted the games right when Germany played, this time no Germany so I predict RvP to score the winner and Cesc the traitor to miss an open net with a minute to go, then we will see how much Barcleona and their fans will want him

Vote -1 Vote +1JV Mauer

@looneygooner, Now how’s that for logic… you call our captain a traitor and then you say you want him to play so poorly that we won’t be able to sell him on? Feeling a little torn?

Vote -1 Vote +1Aicher

The controversy will be on Monday when Fabregas hands in a tranfer request

Vote -1 Vote +1Akash

@Aicher, And I thought the only club that’s selling right now is Barca!!

And if not, you’ll be here Monday saying it’ll be Tuesday. And so forth.

YUp ure the Only one who seemed to be giving credit to these DIRTY GUYS…
Infact Nigel deJong and Van Bommel will decide tommorows final…
They were the best 2 players for Holland….
Sneijder is a Selfish lucky guy who scored tap ins with the help of opposition goalkeeper or players…most his goals were lucky or deflected….just one gud assisst….

The Dirty deJong and vanBommel shud win golden ball together…eventhough we Arsenal fans does’nt like this Mourinhoish tactics, its true that they were key components in Modern day Teams…

We need a Bully like them to play alongside Song…
May be Kevin-Prince-Boateng…

would pay good money to see xavi in agony rolling around on the floor with a career ending injury. not fussed if fabregas leaves afterwards.. it would just make my day.

Vote -1 Vote +1baz

oh.. and the icing on the cake would be if van persie was the man to do it :)

@baz, I like Robin, I really do, but if he ever went in on Xavi, he’d just wind up hurting himself.

Germany a deserved win today.
Would Forlan get a multi year contract toady if he played for Arsenal?
Aogo looks ready for Stoke City or Birmingham City. Muselera would fit right in with our goalkeepers.
Schweinsteiger gave a MOTM performance today. Man U got the wrong MF from Bayern Munich.
Boateng looked beter at RB than LB.
Ozil is a work in progress and not a Fabregas stand in.

He actually plays CB for his club, and that’s where he is most comfortable.

I could make the bold statement that Arsenal will never win anything with Song/Denilson/Diaby in the holding role because they play too ‘nice’. They are not the destroyer like a van Bommel or what Ballack has become. Cana was a destroyer. Vieira could be as all those red cards will attest. van Bommel is smart at his role while Ballack was too gratuitous with his violence and thats why he’s not playing. You have to do the crime but not leave any ‘finger prints’ behind for the refs to make mental notes of.

Song gets yellows before he even leaves the dress room. He can’t be effective with that nonsense going on.

For those who care, Rafael Marquez is the rumored 2nd designated player signing who will join his ex-Barcelona team mate Henry at the NY Red Bulls on Thursday 7/15/10.
