Squillaci, Traore, or maybe squadoosh

n. (sqaw`doosh): Italian-American slang used to describe something that is missing, absent, or forgotten; usually refers to a concrete or abstract object or idea.

With only one exception, Arsenal dot com, if the headline mentions Arsenal this morning, it must mention reported target Seabastien “Kick his ass Seabass” Squillaci. I keep my ear to the French press musings on Arsenal players, just like everyone else in the blogosphere and it seems the newspaperosphere, but I tend to wait until I read it on L’Equipe before I jump to any conclusions. And sure enough this morning there’s a nice little writeup in L’Equipe of the whole Squillaci saga.

Unlike previous stories, like the Spahic link that as usual turned out to be so much hot air, this one seems to have legs. The kind of legs where Sevilla are publicly claiming that Arsenal have made an offer and that they left him off the Champions League qualifier in order to retain the player’s value — or perhaps at the player’s behest.

So it sounds a lot like we’ve bid on this 30 year old but as you all know, Arsenal bidding on a player doesn’t mean that he will sign for us. We publicly admitted a bid for Mark Schwarzer back in May and still haven’t signed a keeper for fuçk’s sake.

As for the player himself, well, I don’t know much except the last game I saw him play in was France’s 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the World Cup. That’s not much to go by, though, since that team was terrible all around though he wasn’t too bad. One of the many questions people have is what foot does he favor and as far as I can tell in a 1/2 hour’s worth of research is that the player plays on the right for France and Sevilla. So, I think he’s a right footed player — please feel free to rip me for “not doing my research” if he’s left footed.

All told it’s a strange move by Arsene, the player is 30 years old and basically sat out the end of the season at Sevilla with an ankle injury picked up during  a nightmare game against Athletico. Though he’s been capped many times by France and been part of many winning teams, everything about this player makes me nervous and I’m left wondering if he can he make the transition from Spain to England?

Of course, I was one of the people who called for Arsene to just sign anyone and now here I am complaining. Typical Gooner, eh?

As for Traore it looks like he’s on his way out. I picked that thread up at the bottom of this ESPN Soccernet article about Squillaci. According to his agent, Arsenal are flogging him to Benfica and frankly, I don’t think Traore will be a huge loss. He’s never impressed me either in going forward or defending and with Gibbs back in the lineup has to be third choice left back. Good luck, young man. Oh and how did that Muslim convert tattoo surgery go this Summer?

That’s about it for today, hopefully Arsene will put pen to paper on Givens or Schwarzer today and then show off our entirely new defense for the season. Then I can rest easy and have a look at that strange new “fanshare” scheme and the Arsenal Supporter’s Trust self-survey.

Oh, and look for an interview with a wonderful chap who follows me on twitter who is both a Blackpool and an Arsenal fan. He gives us a bit of perspective on this weekend’s opponents and if everything falls into place that might come out later today.

Right, off to work!

See my previous post on how greedy Fulham are trying to be with our Schwarzer offer. I’d tell them they can keep their GK and we’ll help Man City lighten their load of Given. I’m hoping Wenger doesn’t give in on the Vela request because it will make us look weak and even more desperate than we already our.

We’re giving Sevilla a 1.5 mil profit on a 30yo in the last year of his contract, I hope they are reasonable.

@ctpa, I don’t think it’s by chance that we’re getting these injuries. There’s too many injuries, and with too many players for it to be a mere ‘coincidence’. These are players who have spent some considerable time in the treatment room:

Djourou
Gallas
RvP
Rosicky
Walcott
Diaby
Bendtner
Denilson
Vela
Barazite
Frimpong
Szczesny (broke both arms in gym. how the fuck arsenal allowed this to happen is beyond me)

The likes of Eduardo, Ramsey have been excluded because they were victims of thugs.

If you look at this site, you will see that the same names keep re-appearing again and again!!

@rosciknote, I’d exclude Diaby too, his injuries were a follow on of his recovery from a broken ankle.

Nasri had a broken leg and his current injury is the result of a tackle. Unfortunate, but not down to being brittle. He does however, have a chequered past.

Rosicky’s injuries are a result of a muscular condition, I have a similar issue, but with my Vastus lateralis muscle rather than the Hamstring as Rosicky had. He had surgery to correct it (moving the muscular, ligament and tendon anchorpoints), and as a result his rehab was obviously difficult, (basically having to learn to walk properly). From personal experience, I can understand why he gets injured so often. I am forced to do constant strengthening exercises, and have pretty much constant knee pain. I still play, but I missed 5 weeks last season, because it causes compensatory behaviour when walking/running/etc so as to take strain off the Vastus lateralis muscle, which is then placed on the other leg muscles.

@Joe, Hughes must be mad to think we’ll giveup Vela for a 40 yr old. Vela is an up and coming player. DOn;t think Wenger would have kept him around so long to only use him as a make weight for a 40 yr old.

I can understand you aren’t terribly enthusiastic, but at least he is an experienced central defender. But if he is 30 and plays behind Gallas for France, what was wrong with extending Gallas for two year?

Vote -1 Vote +1Limestonegunner

@Joe, Yes, but he was okay by Wenger to play for several years and be captain. That’s not the reason he is being allowed to leave, you know. The question is a serious one. Is there a change in team policy? Is it that Squillaci is a cheaper option than Gallas over the course of a multiyear contract? Otherwise it looks like we are weakening ourselves in this position, and that doesn’t make sense.

Vote -1 Vote +1Joe

@Limestonegunner, The captaincy was given to him as an attempt to stabalise him and give him responsibility. It’s a pretty common tactic. Give the bad boy the head-role and he’ll straighten out his ways. I do agree that Wenger was ok with him at first, and is usually more thorough when looking at a player’s personality, but it was a deal made under-pressure. There is no change in policy. Wenger’s age policy is for over 32 year olds, not over 30s. Squillaci is no doubt a cheaper option, and a longer lasting option. Gallas has 1, maybe 2 seasons left. Squillaci has 3, probably 5.

Gallas wasn’t fond of the club, so unless we met his 80k+ wages there was no way he’d stay. I’m sure Wenger/Gazidis tried, they offered him a new deal well before the end of the season, and he declined. Any deal is a two-way street, and at the end of the day Gallas wasn’t willing to compromise, and wasn’t willing to stay. Fair game. But, the fact he still is a free agent goes someway to show that a) other clubs don’t rate him and b) his wage demands are too high.

@Joe, *possibly up to 5, not probably.

Vote -1 Vote +1Limestonegunner

Tim, it sounds like Traore did not just convert according to the article you linked. But in any case what is the relevance of bringing up that he is Muslim as you criticize him as a player? That seems gratuitous to mention–could have said “how did that tatoo removal surgery go?”– and possibly inaccurate, since he may not even be a convert.

I think he hasn’t shown any abilities to defend and is clearly a winger. However, if there is the chance to teach him defense, why sell him now rather than loan him. Clichy might depart after this season if Gibbs takes the position and we’d be light. Maybe there is no confidence in his development of a defensive mentality and skill set.

Vote -1 Vote +1Tim

Fair enough. No criticism of Islam intended. I just found it strange that he became so deeply religious that he has tattoos CUT off his body.

That’s not strange to you?

Vote -1 Vote +1Limestonegunner

@Tim, Certainly it is a bit strange, but I find tatooing itself rather strange. Lots of people have regretted it and I expect in 10years this tatoo removal industry will be doing brisk business!

Vote -1 Vote +1rosciknote

@Limestonegunner, True that. Your comments about him had a touch of xenophobia.

Vote -1 Vote +1Patrick

How is asking about someone’s “Muslim convert tatoo surgery” even slightly xenophobic?

That’s like suggesting saying “hey, what’s with the Indian headdress” is racist.

Vote -1 Vote +1Caribkid69

Traore was not converted to the Muslim religion. He grew up Muslim but was not practicing his faith, was ‘born again” a few years ago and stopped drinking, etc.

It really doesn’t sound funny to me that he wants to remove his tattoos as many people would like to do so because it can sometimes suppress their upward movement in the corporate world.

Vote -1 Vote +1Tim

@Caribkid69, having tattoos removed using laser surgery? That makes sense to me.

Having your tattoos cut off your body? Removing the skin and stretching it back?

That’s fucking weird.

Vote -1 Vote +1Limestonegunner

With Frimpong out, even more reason to get Gago from the Madrid fire sale, as I posted a few minutes ago to yesterday’s comments. He is class; an elegant and steely defensive midfielder. I have liked him since his Boca Juniors days. Competition for Song, and maybe better for big games and Europe.

Vote -1 Vote +1OldGoon

We’ve also had a bid for Marchetti turned down. Atleast Arsenes looking right?

Vote -1 Vote +1Teampossible

@OldGoon, He was also looking at Sorensen in January, and from what I hear, also at some lovely curtains at a fancy shop in Paris, but in the end he didn’t buy the curtains.Nor Sorensen.

They will all get fricking crocked either in practice or during the game and will be out for months.

This injury scenario is extremely frustrating.

i have one side topic question to ask.

if wenger wants a player. for example right now mark for which a bid is rejected. 2nd bid is also apparently rejected. so when wenger tells board he wants a player does he have a say in the finance on how to bid? yeah we all say wenger loves a good bargin… but do we say that because he makes the call on the money in buying? yeah for selling he will always rate a player high? but does he have a say in buying also?

i would be really shocked if its like board say we will give 5mil for mark.. and wenger says no.. 2mil it is.. then bid gets rejected… and wenger himself looses a good player because of his assesment on a players value.

but if its not that.. if the board has its own way of valuing a player and they get all stingy then its the baords fault for not giving wenger the player he wants… but saying that i would like someone to tell this. who has a say? i hope its not mutual shit! i mean comeon.. wenger wants a player he should get it. he said so many times he has the financial backing with the likes of citeh and chelsea pre season.

so how is the deal done? wenger or the board ?
