Stoke v. Arsenal; Discuss!

For those of you lucky enough to get to see this game live, here’s your discussion thread. Me? I have to wait till Russ opens Doyle’s at 9. I guess I’ll just go back to bed!

Anyway, here’s your lineup looks like a good mix of youth and experience.

Fabianski
Coquelin   Silvestre   Campbell   Traore
Eastmond
Denilson   Cesc
Jay   Theo   Vela

UP THE ARSE!

Hmmm, Fabregas? Why bother if we have all the other youngsters? Guess it’s because we’re out of midfielders? C’mon you Gunners.

Down 1-0 to a Fuller goal off a Delap throw into the box. We look like shit in the early going. Traore and Coquelin at FB looking shaky and so does Campbell.

Vote -1 Vote +1ctpa

Traore looks like dogmeat.

Vote -1 Vote +1ctpa

Sylvestre almost give away a PK.
Our passing is not sharp.
Shawcross should have a gotten card for the challenge on Fabregas.

Vote -1 Vote +1ctpa

1-1 FK goal, Fabregas to Denilson at the top of the box for the deflected score.

Vote -1 Vote +1ctpa

Okay. Now that we are warmed up, taken our knocks, taken their best shot, let’s come out in the 2nd half and get more passes into our ‘strikers’.

The color guy on TV is a proper c&nt. Bitching about Arsenal resting the starters, not understanding what this rest thing is all about? Hey dickface, you take a look at our injury sheet? You take a look at the next 4 league matches? You notice how Stoke is all about stepping on our boots and shoving us off the ball? That and the pitch is shite. Glad we’re playing the youngsters. Our touch was far from great, but we’ve got the momentum now.

Vote -1 Vote +1ArseChicago

Now it appears the halftime announcers are pissed about the handball call that lead to our goal. Give it a rest.

Vote -1 Vote +1ArseChicago

Any reports of Dzeko watching us at the Britannia?

Morning there. What was that 1st half? I think Denilson’s goal was our 1st shoot to goal, at 42′!! only 2 shoots total. I like coquelin. He’s playing out of position but seems pacy and with lots of stamina. Dunno if Sylvestre’s foul was inside the box. Not much from our front 3, except vela maybe. Arent funny those Delap assistants?

Vote -1 Vote +1Yan

This Stoke team is a disgrace to football

Vote -1 Vote +1Yan

3 subs. AW must be pissed off.

Vote -1 Vote +1ctpa

Yeah! Walcott looked like shit and is off. Arshavin doesn’t want to come since Wenger had to take his hat off and Ramsey plus Eduardo to the rescue?

Vote -1 Vote +1ctpa

Sylvestre down in a heap after having to make run to stop onside Delap from breaking in alone. Now we could be down 10 men.

Vote -1 Vote +1ctpa

Fuller gets the second on a great run and cross into the box from Sidibie as he outruns Denilson.

Vote -1 Vote +1ctpa

10″ to go.

Vote -1 Vote +1WC

What have we learned? The kids aren’t ready to step up to the big leagues, the geriatrics in the middle of defense aren’t a long term solution – they’re barely a short-term solution, although Arshavin and Eduardo brought a spark to the attack there is still no one that wants to take the chances to score when needed. If Fab isn’t pushing the team, then it seems no one is. Yep we’re relying way too much on our Spaniard.

Well, Arsene got what he paid for today. Glaring holes in the lineup. Traore should not be let play left-back again.

Arsenal should pay for the traveling fans travel costs after this.

Vote -1 Vote +1ctpa

3-1 Stoke. I said Traore looked like shit. The last 2 goals were directly a result of him not being anywhere near where he needed to be.

Vote -1 Vote +1Yan

Oh dear. I wasnt expecting this… But with that back 4, and no real RB that 3rd was coming. plus for their 2nd, rambo instead of passing safe lost the ball

Vote -1 Vote +1ArseChicago

1) I guess we shouldn’t care, because clearly Arsene didn’t care much today. Still, it was embarrassing. Hopefully this bad taste in the mouth propels us forward for the next few weeks.

2) So when we’re giving all these matches to our young guys, we know they’re going to make mistakes, but we have to see the occasional glimpse of greatness. Vela and Walcott have shown nary a glimpse this year. I’m concerned about these two. Would it be fair to say that Theo’s thinking about the World Cup far too much?

3) My fear about our back 4 depth seems warranted after watching today’s match.

4) Go Leeds!

Vote -1 Vote +1Tiki

@ArseChicago, 2) Vela was good against West Ham in the previous round.

3) But we most likely won’t have all four of our first choice back four injured at the same time. The back-up options are fine as long as only one is required at a time.

4) Indeed.

vela and walcott wat a let down .traore doesnt have any positional sense.gotta wonder bout theses lads

Vote -1 Vote +1Magic Johnson

Hmm problem is Song ,was a joke of a player few seasons ago now is our backbone ,so may be all who had nightmares today will turn into decent players, but its tedious to watch the Kids grow up playing a man`s game ,why won`t the crazy man at least buy decent players, imagine if we never had Vermister or Arshavin in the team ,you gotta mix it!!

Vote -1 Vote +1WC

@Magic Johnson, Be that as it may, it took Song a good 4 years to get where he is now. Even I don’t think Wenger has that kind of time to go that long with nothing to show for his efforts.

As much as Arsenal love Wenger could you imagine if he went 7 or 8 years with no silverware while saying he’s waiting for the youngsters to develop? The board would surely draw the line somewhere.

Vote -1 Vote +1Yan

Cut the kids some slack guys. Even our 1st teamers would have had a hard time at Britannia today.

Vote -1 Vote +1FabGooner

Looking at the draw we would have had had we beaten Stoke, Man City away…I think we would have gone out then, so no harm done

Vote -1 Vote +1Bull

Yes had we played a bullshit side, Wenger has pissed me off today, no respect for a cup we had a serious chance of winning. Theo has an absolute nightmare, and the reality was that as soon as the team sheet was up I knew we were fucked. All it takes is a few crap results in the next few games and another comp is out the window. Yes I know that Wenger thinks that it’s worth the risk, but we shold play for every trophy just like chelsea and see where we end up. ARHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Vote -1 Vote +1Tiki

@Bull, Calm down. We can’t do a Chelsea. Because we get more injuries than they do and we don’t have 28 y.o. on the bench and in the reserves and in the youth team*.

*hyperbole

An inept display; bereft of basic skills and positional awareness, compounded by a total lack of spirit. We can all argue that we are short of fit players; we need to conserve our strengths, etc. etc. However, you know what you are going to get at Stoke, passion, blatant fouls, physical challenges, and the Delap throw-in, and you plan accordingly.

If you give everything, challenge for every ball, ensure you are tidy with the basic skills, then there can be no complaints. But pulling up short on challenges for 50 – 50 balls, ball watching in the penalty area, receiving the ball and allowing it to bounce away out of control, these things are unforgiveable. There can be no excuse that many of the team are second string players, juniors or whatever. In fact, in the context of this game, they were expendable, and should have put in a 110% shift.

Cesc and Sol were the only ones concentrating. Denilson gets caught in possession, and was half a yard off the pace. JET is a biggish lad, and should have been putting it about particularly in the Stoke penalty area. Through balls and high ball are there to be challenged, as are defenders and the goalkeeper. (See Stoke’s first goal). Theo is plain hopeless, which not helped by the way he is used, playing too deep. Traore is quick, and is a good crosser of the ball, but has terrible positional sense, which negates his other skills. Vela was non-existant, as were pretty much everybody else.

Yes we did have periods of possession, but possession without purpose is the same as time wasting. Talking of time wasting, Mr Delap should be penalized for his time wasting with the towel routine, I reckon ten to fifteen minutes a game. Perhaps we can make an argument for wiping the ball before every free-kick, goal kick, corner, penalty and what have you.

It is not the loss but the manner of the loss that is important. We have four very important matches ahead. To lose before that sequence, is not psychologically sound. Although we may argue that it only reflects on the players involved, I say it reflects on the whole team, and their future performances. We shall see; I hope I am wrong!

Viva!

What do you expect from a make shift team? We have not put out the best kids, because some of them have been on loan to other clubs, like Jay Simpson. JET shows promise, but he does not look like a striker. Walcott is worrying–he simply plays like a headless chicken today…At present, it is better to use him as an impact sub, or less I am afraid his confidence will sink to a new low.
So is Vela…Let us hope that we will see the
Arsenal we know on Wednesday…
