Tottenham want their day in the sun

For all of my footballing life Tottenham have been in Arsenal’s shadow. In fact, the only year I recall them being a threat was the year we went to the Champions League final and according to legend it was just a plate of fetid Lasagna which caused them to crash out of 5th place in the last game of the season. The fact that there’s no mention in that legend of the other 37 games that they played nor the fact that despite their cheating at Highbury and playing on when Eboue was injured they still only managed a point in the April game against us that year, speaks volumes of the shadow-induced delusion that Spurs fans suffer.
And now they’ve hired a snake-oil salesman for a manager and the club feel like they are reaching new heights, challenging Arsenal again and worthy opponents. All this despite the fact that Arsenal are 13 points clear of Tottenham, challenging for 1st place in the league while they are barely clinging to the hope that they will take 4th, despite all that they feel that they are within touching distance of Arsenal. They feel like if they could just get the slight upper hand, grab the last rung, they could pull themselves out of the sewer and drag themselves into the daylight of the Champions League.
They want it so bad, they can taste it, and that makes them dangerous. A win over Arsenal today will break a ten year curse, end our last chance for any silverware this season, and keep them within touching distance of that fourth place trophy.
Cause for concern is the fact that Tottenham have only allowed 10 goals on their home patch this season. Though that concern is mitigated by the fact that their best player, and Perry Groves’ target for Arsenal, Wilson Palacios is out serving a suspension. Not only that but their first choice back 4 is probably not going to be available with Ledley King and Woodgate both out. Also out are Jenas (who only ever has one good game a season and it’s always against us), Lennon and Kranjcar though I do hear tell that Harry might have a gamble and put rat-faced chav in the lineup.
Meanwhile, us Arsenal supporters are more than aware of the injury problems that have hit our team and today is no different: Arshavin, Gallas, Djourou, Song, Fabregas, Ramsey, and Gibbs are all ruled out for today. Song, in particular, is a big, big blow for Arsenal and how many of you would have said that with a straight face to start the season? Song is out until Manchester City, at least.
The good news is that Robin van Persie makes the bench today with some people making noises about a possible start even. I’d like to say that Robin starting would shock me but after all the ups and downs of the season nothing is going to surprise me any more. Wouldn’t it just be like Arsene Wenger this year to start Rosicky, van Persie, and Bendtner up front and then at the 60th minute take Robin off and put Theo on?
In the midfield our selection is driven by who’s available, really, so Diaby, Nasri and Denilson will probably get the start there. Let’s face it, we need a big game from those three players. It’s the North London Derby, the season’s on the line and you’ve had 8 days to rest I expect a crazy amazing work rate from the midfield. Show Tottenham the lessons we learned from Barcelona, you know, the lessons you learn from playing football at the highest level and not just challenging for 5th place in the Premier League.
At the back, Sol Campbell is slated to start along side Thomas Vermaelen and big Sol’s inclusion in this game is, well, huge. He’ll certainly be the target of abuse from the troglodytes that populate their stands as he was in 2008 when at Pompey and 11 were convicted of shouting homophobic remarks. He dealt with it then and I’m sure Sol is big enough to deal with it now. At fullback, I’m expecting Sagna to start, he almost always plays in big away games, though Wenger could throw on Eboue for more attack in the second half. Meanwhile, Clichy is the only option at left back as far as I’m concerned.

And finally, I hate to be the bearer of plague infected news, but Mark Crapenburg is going to be in charge of today’s match. His catalog of offenses against Arsenal this season is long and varied and you all should be familiar with his refereeing style by now: utter shit. People often wonder how someone like Howard Webb is considered the best referee in England but all you have to do is hold him up against Crapenburg and you can see why he’s considered marginally better. Whereas Webb gave John Terry a caution for his red card tackle on James Milner, I have video of Mark Clattenburg watching Adebayor stamp on Robin van Persie’s face and doing NOTHING:
This isn’t the first, nor the last time which Crapenburg allowed teams to basically assault Arsenal players and given the manner which Tottenham approached the game at the Emirates (snapping into tackles early to “send a message”) I wouldn’t be surprised to see Spuds come out, see that Crapenburg is in charge, and try to break Arsenal legs. Remember Bentley’s red card challenge at the start of the game? That. Don’t be surprised if Mark Clattenburg sees nothing wrong with this tactic and allows them to get away with it.
Arsenal, for their part, are going to have to overcome all of this. We know how Clattenburg referees, we know how Spurs play, we know that they are desperate for three points, we just have to be better. If not, they’ll get their screen prints fired up for the commemorative tee shirts, and head out into the sun for the first time in a decade. We can’t have that, can we?
P.S. Where to watch the match in the States
From what I can tell, the game is not on television in the United States. I checked the Fox Soccer channels, their internet channel, and the ESPN channels. I’ll call Russ from Doyle’s to see if he has any information, and if you all have anything please post it in the comments.
P.P.S.
The game is live on ESPN 2 in HD starting at 11:45 PST, yay!

I think the match is on ESPN2…

I plan on a working lunch from home today, so hopefully the guide isn’t incorrect.
I think that after the barca tie, all of our youngster are better players. They will start to show that today. Match here is on ESPN. Go GOONERRRRSSS!!
Tim, game is on ESPN2 in HD….should be a good one!
Also in 3D according to arseblog.

Where would we be w/o the interwebs?
Hey guys, Kevin from the USA Arsenal site just reminded me that they list all the games and their television viewings on their site here:
http://www.arsenal.com/usa/news/features/where-to-watch-arsenal
I also added a link on my sidebar.
Thanks Kevin!
Does it matter which EPL ref is officiating? The level of utter shite decisions against us is quite evenly distributed among all the mugs as far as I see. Denilson’s going to be key for the match. His job will be to stop Modric and I believe he can do it. C’MON YOU GOONERS!!
Eboue gets the start over Walcott. Bendtner ahead of RVP. King starts. Campbell and Sagna starts as well. Denilson will be key in the middle against Modric.
Rosicky on the (L).
We’ve not got our passing game going yet.
Pavlyuchenko almost had a great shot in the box but for a block by Vermaelen.
Rose strikes a wonder goal from about 25yds. 0-1. Sh*t.
We’ve not gotten anything going in S**** box yet.
Vermaelen down injured with a calf injury.
Sh*t. Vermaelen off on a stretcher. Sylvestre to come in against Defoe.
TV is injured by the block on Pav…Clichy is not doing well on that side, without help…
Rosicky’s head is down…
Spuds are not playing well, misplacing passes. But
we dont have leadership on the field…
Bendtner hasn’t won a high ball yet.
Bendtner looks like he does not believe he can get a goal tonight.
A card for Modric and the pundits don’t think its a yellow.
Eboue playing on the left is a waste…
rosicky on the right? because he cannot cover for Clichy?
Eboue runs himself into Spuds’s players for the third time already…
34th min. even gomes delivers a better punch than Alumnia…
42: watch the play. What is Bendtner doing outside the penalty area? When Clichy gets the ball, he just stands around ball watching, instead of running into the penalty box to get a pass or distract a Spuds player…No wonder Clichy tries a shot…to whom can he play the ball?
WE are not playing as a team…
Try Walcott and RvP in the second half.
Diaby is having a nightmare game…
Remember me again which team played 120min on a swamp last weekend..??
We’ve controlled the ball a lot more, but we’ve done absolutely nothing with it. As the commentator rightly pointed out, for some reason not many of our side want to get inside the box to score. Can’t do much about that Rose goal. Lucky as f&%$.
The people cried out for a leader!
We are making S**** look like they have a world class defense.
Bentley on for wonder boy Rose.
Poor man’s David Beckham has entered the field.
And that’s the season. Bitten by our lack of depth, bitten by the injury bug.
And that was about it. It was fun while it lasted, though.
0-2 Bale looks like Messi as a pass carve through Sylvestre and Clichy.
What the hell was that???
Fucking Sylvestre
Fuck these spurs cunts.
Bring in Theo, bring in Rvp. We need a miracle.
@ArseChicago, we need a miracle not to concede another one, we are playing like Spurs.
2-0. Right. That’s it. Put away the first team. Wrap them in bubble-wrap. Play the reserves in the last 4 games.
Type to you all in August. I’m out of here.
@Patrick, Agreed. I’m on Mugabe Media Lock-down from now until the start of next season’s friendlies.
52min: What is Diaby doing? holding theball up until surrounded by 3 Spuds players? either he is stupid, or other players dont come to his help.
This is not the Arsenal way, nor the Barca way!
Looks like the old Diaby tonight. I can’t remember the last time we’ve wasted so much time and effort outside the box resulting in no chances.
Y does he always see the need to dribble through 2 or 3 players. He might get one but he always gets picked off and loses possession.
We have no left winger in the second half.
We have so many left footer but no one on the left when the crosses come in from Walcott!
69min VPersie must be very disappointed!
arsenal can level the score if they connect in tott’s penalty area.
Good try, van persie! cmon guys!
How the fuck did Gomes save that??? Not our night, is it?
Here we GO!!!!!!!! cmon!
all that for a goal, should have been 3!
What a freaking difference Van Persie makes, it makes me sick when I think of our injury record this year.
@Teampossible,
gomez is insane tonite!
@expobill, So is Silvestre.
FUCKING CUNTS
@nycgunner,
not sure if you’re talking about us or them, but well said. i’m so pissed right now, and so gutted that the challenge for the title is over. another season with no trophies. what will change this summer? will be very interesting to see how things shape up. part of me wants to make the excuse that we had the whole spine of the team missing, but they had a lot of injuries and just played 120 minutes on sunday, so there are really no excuses. that was a poor performance all the way around. we only looked dangerous once rvp came on and by then it was too late. only thing left to enjoy this season is watching him play a couple of games
@geraldinho, Correction. The only worthwhile absentee for them was Palacios!!
@Akash,
how about woodgate, lennon, jenas?
@geraldinho, all shit. three rubbish players.
Well, that one hurts. Throw one more year without trophies onto the pile. The only thing to play for is to see if we can actually get 1 point from one of the top 4 clubs this season. What was so fucking evident tonight was that we’re a completely different team with a #1 striker up front. Not only was the loss painful, but remembering what we’ve been without all these months with Van Persie out makes me lament our misfortune this season even more. Cheers to Campbell, Bendtner, RvP, Theo and Clichy for busting their asses out there. Certainly some questions that need addressing, but we’ve got all bloody summer to do that.
Enjoy it you illiterate fucking Spurs fans. Your next one will be when Halley’s comet comes around again.
I wonder who will be in defense against Wigan?!?
Looked like Barca hangover tonight!!
Looked like today Eboue was back to his old self. Diaby’s game was on and off.Bendtner seemed to be low on confidence tonight, was spending more time out on the flanks than in the center. Rosicky looked rusty.
But I think the problem today was with Denislon’s positioning all night. Why can’t the kid get the importance of the games sometimes and Wenger’s faith in him.
RvP was just brilliant.
Whatever happens season I think we all should be proud of this team. Without (Cesc, Cappy, Song, RvP, Shava) we are still fighting for the Title, which is just amazing.
I still have a feeling we’ll nick it this season!! We have comeback twice this season. Third time will be the lucky one!!
@Akash, Your joking. It’s over. OVER!
Our Worst match of the season. FULL STOP. RvP is pure class.
@Yan, Man, Bendtner looked like he was spooked today!
Sadly we had no one, NO ONE in our midfield who could make an incisive pass all night.
What a difference RVP made when he came on. He was like the tip of a spear. Sadly, Gomes decided to become the best GK on the planet at this moment in time.
There were times tonight when players making passes didn’t know what the receiver was going to do. How is that possible in an Arsenal team. That is not even Barcelona lite.
Bitterly disappointing. I actually dreamed that we lost 3-1. The reality is not much better. We’ve lost control f our destiny.
To finish in the top 3 this season with the injuries we’ve had and with the money we failed to spend, is astonishing. We can be pissed off about it, and I’m sure we will over the next few weeks, but I’m confident that we’ll ultimately be proud of this team for doing what it’s done in a very competitive, very bruising league.
There could be a lot of players on this squad not back next season. Sagna (he doesn’t seem happy and Arsene doesn’t seem happy with him), Arshavin, Eduardo, Vela, Silvestre, Gallas, Rosicky, Eboue, Merida, Almunia, Fabianski. Could be a very crazy offseason.
@ArseChicago, Where did get the thing on Sagna?!? Both Dudu and Rosicky signed contract extensions mid season.
I think it will be Gallas, EggHead, Almunia, Merida on the way out.
Eboue is an iffy!!
Vela’s season has been a real let down, esp after his performance against Wigan last season in the CC. Who knows he might turn up this Saturday.
Hope next season Denilson/Djourou do a Song, Diaby (Me, Myself and Irene) get rid of his schizo other half, Rosicky rest up and the poles cement the position between the poles (sticks).
We need Chelsea to loose atleast twice, ManU once, Us none (and win one game by double digits). I think its still possible, don’t throw in the towels yet. Arsenal have been the kings of Injury time winners this season. This is exactly what it is right now. The season is in injury time (no pun intended) right now. If only Denilson can turn up for the next four games. And oh, yes we still need to find someone to play in the center with EggHead against Wigan!!
Dude, it’s over. Sorry.
I thought we were the better team tonight, too. If it weren’t for that fucking miracle goal and Silvestre’s shite, who knows. Sucks we let a former Man United defenseman seal our fate this year.
