Euro 2012 Deadline Poem: Deutschland über alles

Sol warned us all to stay away
“best not to risk your life.”
“Here be Racists” echoed the Beeb,
“behold the racial strife.”

Yet Terry wears the red and white
of good ole Eng-er-land?
The same man charged with racial abuse,
of Anton Ferdinand?

“Not my problem” replies Michel
from on Platini high.
“Just fill our coffers with your gold
and everything is fine.”

Being known as “the soccer guy”
And living in The States
I’m often asked who I support
In these Europa stakes.

Despite the racist mess we’re in
The Germans do inspire.
Podolski, Ozil, and the rest,
diversity above the mire.

So, Germany for me this year,
they may not be the best;
and born of Scots, French, and Belgians
you’d think I would detest.

Yet if I must support a team
to lift Nationalism’s Chalice
The least worst nation in the bunch
is Deutschland, über alles.

About Tim

Owner, editor, and daily pundit for 7amkickoff. Started writing at 7amkickoff.com on January 1, 2008 as a New Year’s resolution and have written about Arsenal and other topics nearly every day since. Published in So Paddy Got Up the Arsenal Anthology and bi-weekly contributor to Arseblog News with my By the Numbers column. First fell in love with the Arsenal in 2001 when Wiltord won the League at Old Trafford. Have made the annual trip from my physical home in the Pacific Northwest to my spiritual home in London every year since 2006 when I saw Arsenal beat Charlton 3-0. On that day I saw three miracles: Arsenal play at Highbury; Pires, Henry and Bergkamp all play; and Alex Hleb score a goal. Father to my wonderful little daughter, passionate Gooner, irascible online personality: in that order. If you must, you may follow me on twitter @7amkickoff.

Nice poem. Sczesney off and looked a little dodgy. Ideally all our players don’t get past the second round and go home in tact, therefore come on Ireland, Italy but not Spain.

My team as well. Hope Podolski has a good tournament, we sell Arshavin for 7 millions and M’Villa celebrates a goal by revealing an Arsenal jersey below his French kit.

Arsh was causing problems for the Czech defense tonight, was playing those ‘cesc-like’ passes

AA did look very good and distributed the ball well. Always thought Arsene did not use his talents to the best effect.

Still think he could be an important part of a good team, just not at Arsenal.

How do you explain yourself (being the “soccer guy”) to your fellow Americans? Do you give the old “beautiful game” thing or just say it’s the best team game in the world?

You would be very surprised, but the under 35 middle and upper class generations have all grown up playing Soccer in the US . Most of them also still play for local teams and scrimmage in the park for exercise.

No explanation needed for this increasingly large group of Soccer advocates. Add the numerous emigrants from Europe, Africa, Caribbean, Central and South America, Asia and we have no problem filling stadiums and sport bars for good soccer. 80K at the Brazil, Argentina friendly for example.

At the last WC, my local pub (owned by an Arsenal Fan) had to erect hospitality tents in the parking lot to house overflow crowds on the weekends.
